The number of florist shops during that same period however, has not increased but interestingly the online flower industry has.
There are probably several explanations for this. Today it is much easier to order flowers online than ten years ago. More people use the internet today than ever before, and the fears of making transactions online have dramatically reduced whilst at the same time technical developments and innovations in e-commerce have rocketed.
In the early days of e-commerce there was great skepticism about shopping online but with advancements in online security, we see that even the more wary older generations are now trusting the internet as a safe and easy way to shop and send flowers.
In today’s fast-moving society people are always looking for the easiest, quickest way to successfully juggle their ever increasingly busy lifestyles, whilst successfully maintaining important relationships with families and loved ones. Sending flowers is a simple and easy way to do that, making sure that, that certain someone knows that they are in your thoughts no matter where you are or what you’re doing.
The fact remains however, that big occasions account for the lion’s share of online flowers sales. Mother’s Day is by far the biggest, closely followed by Valentine’s Day and Christmas but we are also seeing a trend that more and more people are choosing to send flowers just to show their appreciation or to say thank you throughout the year.
It still seems to be mainly women who send flowers online with approximately 70% of online flower customers being women. There is of course one obvious exception – Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year when it is primarily men who send flowers where red and pink flowers, particularly roses are quite literally the order of the day.
It seems that men tend to prefer to send flowers for romantic reasons, whereas women send flowers to their parents, children, siblings, friends and colleagues throughout the entire year, simply to express feelings of joy, sorrow, gratitude or thanks but also let someone know they are thinking of them.
If you find walking in to a florist shop a bit daunting, then shopping for flowers online is for you. With bouquets and arrangements to suit all tastes and budgets you are bound to find something quickly and easily at a price you can afford.
